The inner values of tourism

Who am I?

I am a co-parenting father of my two teenage children, live in the green part of Berlin and often ponder about our future.

Why am I interested in tourism?

Tourism takes place always and everywhere and in the world; and it shapes people and holiday destinations. Due to the massive influence of individual tourists (on the environment, for instance), tourism is an ideal starting point for tackling change. For more than 20 years, I have been working in companies that have made the digitalisation of tourism their goal.

Dear…,

Today I experienced something really new that I had never seen anywhere else before. Because I was overcome by an urgent need, I went “behind the scenes” of a hotel that must have been built in the twenties.

Back then, we didn’t have a clue about all the things that were about to happen to us. The natural disasters, the masses of people… well, you know that well enough yourself. At that time, it was still necessary to build cheaply, without taking into account the many actual needs of the guests.

In any case, the waste separation machines were impressive and state of the art. I wouldn’t have thought that more value was placed on their quality than on their exterior looks. So it’s not only the beautiful exterior that is sold here, but also the actual “inner values”.

See you in Berlin.

Wishes and hopes behind the image of the future:

1. “For the future of tourism I hope that…

the people in charge of holiday destinations use their resources responsibly.

2. “If I could wish for anything at all, I would…

wish that tourists no longer had to worry about environmental damage or fair treatment of employees at their holiday destination, because everything would have been thought through in advance – so that “bad” treatment of a holiday destination is no longer even possible.

3. “If I were a powerful politician, I would…

make sure to implement my second wish.
