Certainly uncertain!

How can futures thinking be made accessible, practical, and engaging for a diverse festival audience?
Certainly Uncertain! is an interactive exhibition trail within the Waterkant future exhibition in Kiel. Across six playful stations, visitors are introduced to key mindsets and methods of futures thinking.
  • 1,600+ visitors
A diverse audience of families, school students, university students, researchers, and entrepreneurs attended the festival and exhibition in 2025.
  • 6 interactive stations
Six hands-on stations introduce core ideas, methods, and perspectives of futures thinking.
  • 16 cushions
A glossary corner features 16 printed cushions explaining key concepts such as utopias, scenarios, and dystopias.
  • 2 giant dice
Two oversized dice invite visitors to playfully engage in critical discussions about dominant images of the future.
Thinking about the future? Hard to prioritise when the present already feels overwhelming. Fair enough, but if we do not engage with possible futures, we leave them to others, or to chance.

Certainly Uncertain! was designed for the diverse audience of the Waterkant Festival and beyond. Through six low-threshold, interactive stations — and a touch of humour — the exhibition invites visitors to rethink tomorrow by exploring what is possible, improbable, and desirable.
