Shaping Futures: A Futures Literacy & Foresight Course

How can futures literacy be systematically developed and applied in day-to-day work?
In a multi-week learning programme, GIZ staff build an understanding of core foresight approaches and directly test their application in their own professional contexts.
  • 5 weeks
A digital learning format combining self-study, live sessions, and transfer into everyday work.
  • 12 participants
Small international cohorts enable deeper exchange and collaborative learning.
  • 22+ hours of learning
Independent work, peer learning, and facilitated sessions are closely interconnected.
  • 6+ cohorts
An ongoing training format, already delivered more than six times and continuously refined.
Futures thinking is becoming increasingly important in international cooperation. At the same time, everyday work often leaves little space, structure, or suitable learning formats to systematically explore and practise the key concepts and methods of futures research.

Originally designed by Future Impacts and the GIZ Strategic Foresight Team, the course was piloted and further developed by us in 2024 and has since been continuously facilitated by our team. Step by step, participants build foundations in futures literacy and foresight while directly applying them to challenges from the GIZ working context, making futures thinking tangible and actionable rather than abstract.

Learning goals of the course
1
Building futures literacy
Participants are introduced to key mindsets in futures studies and reflect on their own assumptions and perspectives, including through a Futures Literacy Lab.
2
Understanding and mapping trends
Relevant developments are systematically identified and analysed through horizon scanning methods, including STEEP analysis and the Futures Wheel.
3
Working with scenarios
Participants analyse existing scenarios and develop their own future scenarios using Dator’s archetypes, applying them to test strategies and decisions.
4
Applying Foresight to Practice
In the final phase, participants transfer the learned approaches to their own work contexts and translate insights into concrete next steps.
